Beth Yohe Interview
Aug 22, 2022We are always looking for ways to improve the UnBoxed broadcast so, whenever we can do less talking I count that as an instant improvement on what we are doing. All joking aside, we were pleased to have as our special guest for our latest broadcast, Beth Yohe, Executive Director of the Conflict Center in Denver, Colorado.
Robert extended an invitation to Beth to join our broadcast for two reasons. First, he has worked with her on many projects and knows she is the real deal. Second, as he mentions on the show, he happened to be at an event with one of Beth’s team members. As they began talking she could not stop singing Beth’s praises about her leadership and the positive impact Beth has on their organization. Well, how can you not get a person like that on your leadership broadcast?
Beth is the executive director of the Conflict Center in Denver Colorado and has had a career committed to social justice, equity, and adult education. We could not have asked for a better guest for our first interview.
Beth offered what felt like a masterclass in leadership, addressing the difficult topic of bias and the challenges we face as a society on issues of race. She discussed how leadership is a fluid skill that requires a leader to meet their team members where they are and to lead accordingly. Her expertise is managing conflict and she spoke about skills the conflict center helps both youth and adults develop. Midway through our conversation Beth spoke about the philosophy and principles of leadership she lives by and how to implement them into your leadership: be a lifelong learner, recognize the skills and talents of others, developing a hands off leadership style, do not create a false sense of emergency, own our mistakes, and model the types of relationships we want our team members to have with each other. Our conversation concludes with her advice on leadership and I can say that as the hosts of the show we walked away better people because of it. If you are new to leadership or have been leading for years there is something here for you. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did.
